ABOUT NEW TECUMSETH:

New Tecumseth (2016 population 34,242) is a town in Simcoe County, in south-central Ontario. While it is not officially a part of the Greater Toronto Area, it is counted, in terms of the census, as being a part of the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area. The main centres in New Tecumseth are the communities of Alliston, Tottenham, and Beeton. The municipality was created through the amalgamation of the municipal governments of these three communities and that of the Township of Tecumseth.

The town grew as a commercial centre for the area farmers and was best known as a potato-growing area. Honda of Canada Manufacturing operates a large auto manufacturing facility southeast of Alliston, currently consisting of three major factories.

 

EDUCATION:

New Tecumseth has eight elementary schools and two area high schools; Banting Memorial Public High School in Alliston and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School in Tottenham.

 

EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS:

Over 190 Vendor Booths line the quaint Victorian Main Street of Beeton at the Beeton Honey & Garden Festival each May. Merchants offer unique merchandise for the home and garden while car enthusiasts will be ecstatic to meander through the Classic Car and Truck Show.

The Alliston Potato Festival is an eclectic mix of activities that are fun for the whole family. From the festival parade, to the midway, the poker tournament to the car show there’s something for everyone at the festival that takes place annually in August.

The Tottenham Bluegrass Festival is a three-day stage show featuring well-known bluegrass bands from around Canada and the United States. In addition to the main stage entertainment, the festival also includes a children’s talent show, instrument-specific workshops, new band showcases, an artisan’s village, a barbeque supper, and campfire picking. Contributing to the 30-year success of this festival is its location, the Tottenham Conservation Area, with shady camping for hundreds of trailers and tents and a natural amphitheatre overlooking a small lake.

The Beeton Agricultural Society puts on one of the oldest agricultural fall fairs in Canada. The Beeton Fall Fair provides a great weekend of family fun with exhibits, demonstrations, competitions and rides that is sure to provide great entertainment for all ages.

 

SPORTS & RECREATION:

New Tecumseth has several indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, most located within the three main communities of Allison, Tottenham and Beeton. Some of the facilities include indoor ice rinks, an outdoor ice rink, gymnasiums, fitness areas, indoor running tracks and an indoor soccer field.

Tottenham Conservation Area is situated on a picturesque 41 acres of prime parkland overlooking a magnificent pond. The sandy beach offers a host of possibilities for keeping cool and having fun! A pavilion is located near the beach area for picnics and shelter. Bring your canoe or pedal boats to fish in the pond or bring your friends and plan a beach volleyball game! The park offers camping facilities, fishing, nature trails and a pavilion.
